Lately I’ve been discovering a lot of people for who they really are. Liars, cheats, theives, horrible parents, drug addicts, deadbeats, etc. People I once thought were trustworthy, or at least decent. What bothers me the most is the no fucks given about their own child(ren).

Tell me something good. It can be a personal accomplishment, a good deed you’ve done, heart warming story, etc. Restore my faith in the human species, before I swear off everyone, and become a hermit.

And how fucking cool is this thing? Ithe sounds terrible, but in another 5-10 years of development, I’d be easily willing to trade my arm for one.

I know how you feel man, the audacity of some people. The most heartwarming thing I can think of is that I purposely become friends with the outcasts and “uncool” people to make them feel better, and I like it a lot, those “outcasts” have bigger and brighter personalities than those who ignore them.

2 of my 3 cats are chilling with me in the living room and they’re not bugging me for food, or clawing anything, or peeing on anything.

Kinja'd!!!

Also my jalapeño bush and basil plant in my assortment of potted plants on my deck are holding up very nicely.

Oh wait, you said something good about humans.

It’s really about paying it forward, so please bear with me as I highlight the last year of my life. One year ago my brother lost his six year fight with cancer and passed away at the age of 55. In January of this year my dad passed away unexpectedly, although he was 80 years old he was in excellent health. Upon returning from my dad’s funeral my company laid me off.. kicked when yer down? Fuck them with a cactus.

I’ve done a bit of consulting but mostly I’ve been helping out others; had my mom and sister-in-law stay with me for a while, then dove into friends and community support to help others that really needed a hand. A neighbor who couldn’t get to work cuz their car needed repairs and they had no money, I fixed it (water pump, temp sensor, brakes, fluids & filters). Lent them my car while I worked on it, they were very happy. Folks across the street needed to move for financial reasons, I spent 16 hours helping them move last weekend. A friend lost his house in a bitter divorce, I’m helping him build a new home one 2"x 6" at a time. A man needs dignity and a place to support his family.

I hope to find a new job shortly as my funds are running low, but I’ve never felt better.

a few weeks ago some goof in a bro-truck cut off a metro bus a block or so in front of me and I checked up to let the bus driver pull out and around the guy. Quarter mile down the road still in traffic the bus driver pulls up on the other side of me and opens the door motioning me to roll down my window. He thanked me for letting him in and then told me I had a tail light out. I stopped at NAPA on the way home - the old bulb came out perfect/no troubles and the new one went in perfect/no troubles. Car Karma.

Jeez, I tried writing a few ideas out to help you out, but they all sounded like bragging about inconsequential events in daily life.

So instead of some inane humble-brag, let me just assure you that there are good people out there who care greatly for their kids and who treat their neighbours with respect.

My dad always tells me that there will always be bad times. Bad times, tribulations, are just part of life. They suck, but they aren’t permanent.

I’ve been through some tough times in my life where I’ve lost faith in others or faith in myself, and have been tempted to just give into that feeling everything sucks. My dad has been through tough times, too, but I’ve never seen him look hopeless or helpless, even when facing something incredibly difficult. I’ve asked him before how he always seems to remain so calm and to maintain such a positive outlook and it’s because he refuses to wallow in the moment when things are bad. He also has an unshakable faith in God, so part of it is a rock steady belief that there’s a larger plan to things, even if he can’t always see what it is.

I’m not as hopeful or as optimistic as my dad, though I try everyday to be. Part of that is by incorporating his reminder that the bad times aren’t forever. If things are really sucking for you right now, try to imagine what things will be like a year from now. In a year things won’t be exactly the same. Your emotions won’t be the same. Hopefully things will get better.

As for people turning out to be less than stellar, that sucks, too. I get it. But please don't let losers change who you are. Don't let them change your generosity, your willingness to reach out to and connect to other people. Don't let them take away your kindness and empathy. Don't give them that much power, because they're not worth it.

That would be a good guess since the one not in this picture is by far the loudest most annoying one, but she’s upstairs sleeping somewhere. I’m sure she’ll be meowing in my face to feed her at 7:30 in the morning though.

There are people out there who are making prosthetic legs beautiful.

It’s one thing to care enough to devote your time to helping people walk again. It’s another thing to care enough to make them feel beautiful again.

I’ve come to that realization too over the years; It never ceases to be upsetting and I fear it’s turning me into a misanthrope.

I assure you though that there are good people out there even if they are in the minority. Of course be cautious and protect yourself, but don’t shut down completely. Because, when you do run across good people you want to be open enough to allow your interactions with them to brighten your life.

I have a story about a friend of mine that might cheer you up. On the way home from a private car meet recently, he was a few cars back from a minivan that had a tire blow out. The minivan crashed catastrophically and threw two passengers out of the car and into the woods. Apparently my friend stopped his car and ran into the woods without hesitation to help. He located and carried out a young boy, and then went back to search for the second person. He found a woman who was injured beyond a point where she could be moved, so he stayed with her until EMS was able to figure out how to extract her without causing further injury. He was humble about the whole event and getting the heroic details out of him was like pulling teeth. He still maintains that what he did was nothing special and simply the right thing to do.

As for me... I don’t think I’m a particularly nice person; I’ve been jaded by my interactions with the scum of the earth. But I will still never lie, cheat, steal, or compromise my morals in any other way, and I know there are at least a handful of other people out there like me.

Just about every person currently in south Louisiana qualifies. Everywhere you turn, someone is helping somebody by volunteering their time, money, or labor. I have yet to meet a person who did not spend time in someone else’s house helping with demolition and cleanup.

Here’s a quick story that always makes me smile when I think about it.

When my grandfather was in his mid-80's, he went to the mall to by my grandma a Christmas present. On the way back to the car, when he got to the curb, he dropped his cane. All he could do was stand there and try not to fall. He couldn’t walk without it and he damn sure couldn’t bend over to pick it up. As he stood there in a full on panic, two teenage boys were driving by, saw what was happening and stopped. They picked his cane up and helped him to his car. That could’ve been disastrous, but because they stopped and helped everything was fine.

After years and years of scrimping and saving, I almost have enough to get my second ‘fun’ car - importing a FIAT 126. :D

Need to find a full-time job first, and my own place, but if trying to add up the pennies all these years has taught me anything between bouncing from part-time job to part-time job (working 4 different jobs right now...), it’s that you can do anything if you put your mind to it and that good times are always on the timeline SOMEWHERE - you just have to be patient, not care what other people think, and try your damndest :)

I sold my project ‘69 Lemans/GTO clone to a father and son that wanted a project to work on together. Sold it for half my asking price because they reminded me that I bought it to work on with my dad. I was happy to see it go to them.
